First Clients, Lasting Lessons — The Moments That Shape Us

Everyone remembers their first.

The first client who cracked your heart open. The first time you cried after a session. The first case that made you question everything you thought you knew.

It doesn’t matter how many years you’ve been in the field—those early moments stay with you. They’re etched into the foundation of your practice, shaping not only how you work but who you become.

In The Courage to Care: Stories of Healing, Hope, and the Power of Social Work, we asked over 50 SWEET Institute social workers to reflect on these defining moments. What we received were vivid, raw, unforgettable stories that remind us of the sacredness of this work.

The Imprint of the First Case
One clinician told us about a teenage girl she worked with during her first year as a social worker. The girl had been through multiple placements, displayed aggressive behaviors, and trusted no one. “Everyone said she was impossible,” the clinician recalled. “But when she asked me to braid her hair, I knew something was changing.”

That moment—a simple act of human connection—became a turning point not just for the girl, but for the clinician, who realized that small gestures often carry the most therapeutic weight.

Another clinician described working in an emergency shelter for survivors of domestic violence. “It wasn’t the trauma that surprised me—it was the resilience,” she said. “They taught me how to listen without needing to fix, how to sit with pain without rushing to relieve it. That has never left me.”

These early encounters didn’t just teach skills—they initiated clinicians into what it truly means to hold space for another human being.

The First Time We Didn’t Have the Answers
Many of the clinicians in The Courage to Care spoke openly about feeling unprepared, overwhelmed, or unsure. Some froze in moments of crisis. Others second-guessed every intervention. A few broke down after work, wondering if they were cut out for the field at all.

And yet, again and again, they chose to stay. They chose to learn. They chose to show up differently the next day.

It’s easy to glorify experience. But this book honors the beginning—the shaky first steps, the inevitable mistakes, the early clients who offered us grace while we were still finding our footing.

One clinician put it this way: “My first client showed me how much I didn’t know—and how much I was capable of learning.”

Clients Who Became Our Teachers
What makes The Courage to Care so powerful is how it elevates the voices of clients—indirectly, through the memories of clinicians. We meet the people who challenged them, inspired them, haunted them, and transformed them.

A clinician who now runs youth programs shared the story of a young man who had been labeled “dangerous” by multiple systems. But when she asked him what he needed most, his answer was simple: “A reason to keep going.” That conversation changed the trajectory of his life—and hers.

Another clinician remembered a client in hospice care who said, “You’re the first person who’s looked me in the eyes in weeks.” That moment has guided her practice ever since.

These stories show us that social work is never a one-way street. Every time we support, we’re also being shaped. Every time we witness, we’re also being witnessed.

The Clients We Never Forget
Some first clients stay with us because of what they taught us about trauma, systems, or human behavior. Others stay because of how they mirrored our own wounds, or pushed us to confront our limitations. And sometimes, they stay because we lost them—and we carry the grief in silence.

In The Courage to Care, social workers speak not only of triumphs but of heartbreak. The clients they couldn’t reach. The ones who disappeared. The ones whose stories ended too soon.

One clinician admitted, “I still think about him. I wish I had known more. I wish I had asked different questions.” Her vulnerability is not weakness—it is the mark of someone who cares deeply and keeps growing.

Why These Stories Matter
In a profession so often reduced to paperwork, metrics, and burnout, these stories are a reminder of why we entered the field in the first place. They reconnect us to the heart of the work—the moments that moved us, challenged us, and invited us into sacred relationship.

They also serve another purpose: they show the world what social workers do. Not just in tasks or titles, but in the invisible labor of love, listening, and presence. The kind of work that rarely makes headlines but quietly transforms lives.

A Book That Honors the Beginning
The Courage to Care begins with these first stories for a reason. Because they remind us that no one starts out an expert. We grow through experience, through reflection, and—most of all—through relationship.

This book is for every clinician who remembers their first client. For every reader who wants to understand the heart of social work. For every student wondering if they’re ready. For every professional wondering if they still have what it takes.

And for every client—past and present—who became our teacher.
