The Heart of Social Work: Stories of Passion, Purpose, and Transformation

What compels someone to dedicate their life to the service of others? What fuels the passion to keep going, day after day, despite the challenges, the emotional weight, and the complexities of the human experience? The answers to these questions lie in the deeply personal journeys of those who have chosen this path—not just as a profession, but as a calling.

At the SWEET Institute, we recently posed a question to our community:

“Why did you choose your profession, and what has kept you passionate about it?”

The responses we received were nothing short of extraordinary—testaments to resilience, transformation, and an unyielding commitment to human dignity. These words are more than just answers; they are echoes of purpose, reflections of experience, and reminders of why this work matters.

From Personal Experience to Collective Impact
For many, the choice to enter social work, therapy, or mental health was not merely a career decision—it was an extension of their own personal journeys.

“I chose to become a therapist because of my positive experience in my own therapy journey, and I wanted to help people as I was helped by my therapist.”

—Olivia Holden, Therapist

Healing, when experienced firsthand, often ignites the desire to extend that same possibility to others. For Olivia, the transformative power of therapy was not just a means to personal growth—it became a mission to guide others through their own healing.

A Moment of Awakening
For some, the decision was shaped by a singular moment of clarity, a pivotal experience that altered the course of their lives.

“A troubled youth, a fast crowd, a bad trip, a close call led to a psychiatric hospital admission. I can still recall the encounter with the resident psychiatrist who had me consider if my use of drugs might have been a response to feeling unhappy. Experiencing that link in that moment set my course toward service in the mental health space. Delivering social services reinforces the humanity and value of the work—that, and the personal rewards, have kept me at it.”

—Stuart Aaronson, Social Worker

There are moments in life that shift our trajectory forever. Stuart’s story is a powerful testament to how a single conversation—an insight, a moment of being truly seen—can plant the seeds for an entire career in service to others.

A Commitment to Systems Change
While many social workers and clinicians engage in direct practice, others find their passion in addressing systemic barriers and creating large-scale change.

“While my background includes direct social work with individuals and families, I now utilize my natural talents and formal education in social work and business management to address healthcare issues at a macro level. My work remains rooted in social work principles, as I strive to empower businesses to develop impactful products and services that benefit entire populations.”

—Wendy J Holness, Medicare Strategy Leader

Wendy’s journey reminds us that social work is not limited to one-on-one interventions; it is also about shaping policies, influencing healthcare structures, and ensuring that entire populations have access to the resources they need. The passion for change can take many forms, all of them essential.

Inspired by the Service of Others
Many who step into this field are inspired by those who came before them—the mentors, the volunteers, the individuals whose service illuminated a path forward.

“I chose social work as my profession after experiencing work as a volunteer, having the example of several people who inspired me on many different levels by their service to people who were poor or without resources or support. Even though it took a few years to get to a point which would allow me time to think about the experience and be ready to choose and enter a school and a program, the seed had already been planted.”

—Anne-Elizabeth Straub, Clinical Social Worker

Anne-Elizabeth’s story is a beautiful example of how inspiration can take root and grow over time. The people we encounter—those who model compassion, service, and justice—leave an indelible mark on our hearts, shaping our purpose in ways we may not recognize until years later.

The Beauty of Deep Connection
For many in this field, the greatest gift is the privilege of witnessing human growth, resilience, and transformation.

“I have an abiding interest in understanding what motivates people—especially in developing awareness and insight, making appropriate life choices, and showing up for self and others to achieve a deep level of relational satisfaction. I value each individual’s story, appreciating the struggles and the hopes, the despair and the joy that are a part of the work in overcoming obstacles. I value the deep connections that develop from the unique relationship between patient and therapist.

The overarching theme to all of this is that I value the opportunity to create and provide the space—the safe space—for people to be authentic and face the range of thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and values that make each individual story unique. I feel honored and privileged to witness the personal growth that takes place for the patients with whom I work, and in that process, I learn from my patients as well. There is beauty in the mutuality that comes with this profession.”

—Marisha Krupkin, Social Worker

Marisha’s words capture something deeply profound: the reciprocal nature of the work. Social work is not just about guiding others—it is about being transformed in return. It is about learning, evolving, and sharing in the beauty of another person’s journey.

The Heartbeat of a Profession
What unites all these stories is a common thread: the deep, unwavering belief in the power of human connection, the resilience of the human spirit, and the responsibility to hold space for healing and transformation.

This profession is not merely about interventions, policies, or case management. It is about the moments—the ones that change lives, shift perspectives, and remind us why we do this work. It is about standing with people in their darkest hours and celebrating with them in their triumphs.
