SWEET Reflections: What’s Missing
Sometimes the Answer Is in What We Have Not Yet Seen
When something is not working, our instinct is often to focus on what is wrong. We analyze the problem, identify weaknesses, and search for explanations. We also try harder, add another strategy, another intervention, another conversation, and another plan.
Yet sometimes the most useful question is much simpler: What’s missing?
Perhaps the relationship is not missing love. It is missing understanding. Perhaps the team is not missing talent. It is missing trust. Perhaps the treatment is not missing another intervention. It is missing engagement. Perhaps the person is not missing motivation. They are missing hope. Perhaps we are not missing discipline. We are missing clarity.
The question changes how we look at problems because it shifts our attention from what is defective to what may be absent.
What’s Missing invites us to become curious about the spaces we often overlook. Because sometimes progress does not require doing more. Sometimes it requires seeing what has not yet been seen.
The SWEET Insight
We often try to solve problems by adding more: more effort, more advice, more pressure, and more strategies. Yet the breakthrough may come from identifying one essential element that has been absent all along.
Before asking: “What else should I do?” It may be worth asking: “What is missing here?”
Insight in Action
Choose one area of your life that feels stuck. Be it a relationship, a project, your work, a personal goal, or a difficult conversation.
Instead of immediately trying to fix it, ask: “What might be missing?”
Is it information? Trust? Support? Time? Clarity? Safety? Connection? Courage? Rest? Meaning?
Do not rush to answer. Stay with the question. Sometimes the quality of the question determines the quality of what we are finally able to see.
Quote of the Day
“Sometimes what changes everything is not discovering what is wrong, but finally seeing what is missing.”
